Housing and COVID-19: Stopping Home Loss During the Pandemic
Please join New America’s Future of Property Rights Program for a one-on-one conversation with Diane Yentel, President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

The COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc on the U.S. economy. It has already crippled the transportation, leisure, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors, resulting in mass layoffs and a surge in unemployment claims. After years of steady economic growth that drove unemployment to a 50-year low, the pandemic has suddenly raised the specter of joblessness on a scale not seen since the Great Depression.

Housing is the largest expense for most American families. Soaring unemployment rates will likely result in a surge in home loss, particularly evictions. Those who lose their homes in the midst of quartantines will greatly imperil themselves and others.

What must policymakers do - now - to prevent the nightmare scenario of mass housing loss in the midst of a pandemic?

Please join New America’s Future of Property Rights Program for a one-on-one conversation with Diane Yentel, President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. We will discuss strategies at the national, state, and local level to minimize the housing fallout of COVID-19, and steps that renters and homeowners can take to protect themselves in this crisis.
